Women in paintings and gynaikeia in Seleucia at Zeugma

Several well-to-do houses in Seleucia at Zeugma (the houses 1, 2 and 3) contain a room whose walls were decorated with full-length paintings of women. In the room P30 of house 3, as many as twelve women were painted. Some of these women painted in Zeugma houses can be identified through inscriptions (Penelope, Deidamia, the amazon Prothoe), but most remain anonymous. The examination of these three rooms, their location within the organization of the houses, and the identity of these painted women allows us to assume that these rooms were probably gynaikeia occupied by the women of the oikos during the day.
