A massive innovation of the Classical World, coinage nevertheless took a long time to appear in Rome. Moreover, it underwent several dramatic changes in the course of history, eventually standing out as one of the Empire’s main features. Ancient sources tend to underestimate these transformations, laying stress instead on a long and smooth monetary tradition for reasons pertaining both to the nature of coinage and to the values of ancient Roman society.
