Beyond this enigmatic question, there are a number of characters out there on the stage ad several generations hiding out in the wings: couples, families in the inter-generational but also sometimes in a trans-generational meaning of the word. How can we think of such fertilisation that leads on to pregnancy – a condition to be aborted? Or pursued? What place do those involved occupy, whether as individuals, couples or families? Thirty years of experience in family planning services provide the background for the series of questions the author raises in the present article.
