This article is an account of a research project on the personal experiences of couples confronted with cancer. The quality of life of patients and of people living with them becomes more and more crucial as the life expectancy of the patients increases. The couple constitutes a specific psychic entity resulting from the inter-subjective dynamics between spouses. That entity can be seriously impacted in the event of serious disease. The study providing the basis for the present article addresses the announcement of the disease, the treatment period and remission. The authors demonstrate that the “Lazarus Syndrome ” not only concerns patients but also their spouses, and that the couple’s homeostasis is perturbed far beyond the announcement of remission.
