Family therapy brings into action an interlocking series of different forms of support: support from the family and its members, support from the therapist(s) working with the family group, and support from therapists through other groups, as in supervisory work. The child suffering from psychiatric disorders is not the only person to suffer: all family members are drawn into a network of painful and complex relations. The therapists listening to them may also expect, by transfer, to go back over their own family bonds, their own history over the generations. Two clinical examples here illustrate this issue through dreams, one during a session and the other with the therapist but outside a session.
