In present-day society, we are led to provide consultative care to an ever greater number of families of various forms, including nuclear families, separated families, stepfamilies, single parents and same-sex-parent families in which each member, both parents and children, needs to find their place. In each of these families, the question often arises as to the link between conjugality and parenthood, which in turn throws up the matter of origins that are a major issue in the child’s development.Through a clinical case following the history of a five-year-old boy and his homosexual mum, we will see how difficult it can be for the parent to address a complex form of conjugality in the child’s story and how, when this questions remains confused, this can make it more difficult for the child to build his or her identity.
