Digital tools have enabled a critical edition of l’Encyclopédie owing to methodological choices that have been adapted to the work’s complexity. The choices taken on by ENCCRE, apart from the normal functions attendant on all critical editions (such as the choice of an original reference copy), value especially the matching up with the material item (constant access to a quality facsimile), the foregrounding of the intellectual stakes of the project (scrupulous treatment of the textual components of such stakes, etc.), and an annotation on several layers achieved over a long period and collectively by a multidisciplinary team. Such a makeup has enabled the creation of a new temporality, whereby the progressive publication of critical work favours both the enrichment and the research dynamics of the work.
