This article looks at the place alcohol occupies within some couples. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the authors argue that alcohol can be considered as a kind of divider that prevents the couple from achieving fusion rather than a facilitator in breaking the bonds between them. Thus, for each member of the couple, alcohol takes on a specific function in their psychic economy and, frequently, when a separation occurs, the phantasy binding the subjects can be revealed. A case study, that of Simone, illustrates this, showing that such couples can come together from a failure by each member to elaborate a kind of “serene loneliness.” Gradually, the therapist may help the subject to develop her “ability to be alone” in order to create another bond with the partner.
