Is there natural porosity between Black Studies and Cultural Studies? From one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other, from an American experience to a British experience, can these two fields move beyond occasional borrowings of tools and concepts that now identify approaches said to be “interdisciplinary”? This paper discusses the theoretical and methodological flexibility of Black Studies vis-à-vis Cultural Studies. I contend that this apparently logical connection between two studies comes up against the history of Black Studies, conceived as a field and even most as a discipline which institutionalization and specific approach have participated in its recognition. Despite, their movement towards africana and diasporic studies in the 1990s, Black Studies have remained a framed field yet hardly porous to other studies. Finally, I discuss African Diaspora Studies and Black Cultural Studies as third lines intersecting Black Studies and Cultural Studies.
