The article traces changes in Chinese feminist activism in the deteriorating political environment in China for the two decades after the FWCW in 1995. It highlights young feminists’ innovative activities as well as the intense surveillance of organized activism by a totalitarian state extremely insecure of its power. With drastically reduced public space and cyber space for activism, Chinese feminists have continued to explore new ways to demand gender equality and to pursue social and cultural transformations.
