Area studies and globalization: Between anthropology, epistemology and ethics

As its title suggests, this essay unfolds in three parts: from an anthropological standpoint, it traces in broad strokes how the notion of area studies has its roots in the Western representations of the Other and their companion ideologies since the classics. It moves on to highlight the role that the approach by cultural areas has played in Humanities and Social Sciences in the last two centuries. Finally it explores the perspective for a new relevance of the Studies of cultural areas in the era of globalization, emphasizing the ethical concerns they entail.
