Utopia is a literary genre, born in 1516 in the West with the publication of Thomas Morus’ book, Utopia, which will renew political thinking by proposing an alternative to the existing system. From this matrix, numerous utopias will be printed or experimented. Hence we have at our disposal a wide corpus, written and lived, to help us understand the place allocated to architecture and urban planning in utopias. The author undertakes here a first panoramic survey of this topic, demonstrating how utopia is plural and how each one has its own territorial design and built expression. There is no architectural or urban utopia without a political and societal utopia. Utopians first change their ways of living in order to break free from the ‘diktats’ of the system they are challenging (sexuality, education, work, nature, etc.), and then, invent new dwellings and another environment…
