Explaining Hostility Toward the Police in the French Banlieues: Discriminations, “Neighborhood Targeting,” and Racialization. A State of the Art

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2017. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : What are the dynamics of minorities’ hostility toward the police in the French banlieues or poor urban neighborhoods? This state of the art is based on French and international studies (United States, United Kingdom…) from different and often distant research traditions. For Attitudes toward the police (ATP) studies, hostility toward the police mostly follows from individual contact with the police and racial profiling. Beyond personal experience with police officers, other works document the collective construction of an historical conflict: police action produces specific forms of racialization. Some groups feel themselves categorized and targeted on a racial as well as territorial basis (i.e., spatio-racial) and singled out as an “at-risk group.”
