This text analyzes some current developments in Chinese legal reforms in light of the rhetoric of the judicial authorities. This rhetoric, mainly from Wang Shengjun, the current Chinese Supreme Court President, focuses on local paradigms and gives a central place to harmony. One illustration of this new rhetoric is the forceful return of judicial mediation to solve conflicts in civil matters. This development raises serious concerns with respect to the future of the current legal reforms.
