Résumé La littérature varie, en diachronie et en synchronie. Dès que l’on restitue leur place à ces variations, il apparaît que la conception absolue de la littérature n’est ni absolue ni éternelle, qu’elle a une histoire qui, en France, s’est dessinée au début du xixe siècle, lorsque cette conception a été théorisée par Victor Cousin (dès 1815 et dans plusieurs livres, dont ses Fragments philosophiques et Du Vrai, du Beau, du Bien). Au même moment s’est installée une certaine conception de la démocratie. L’article propose un retour sur cette origine et avance la thèse qui pourrait s’énoncer dans la formule suivante : à démocratie restreinte, littérature restreinte.

Literature does vary, both in a diachronic way and a synchronic way. Contextualizing these variations, we soon find that the absolute conception of literature itself is neither absolute or eternal : it has a history of its own, and as far as French literature is concerned, it dates back to the early 19th century, when a certain conception of democracy was beginning to be discussed too. In France, literature as an absolute notion was first theorized by Victor Cousin (from 1815 and in several books, including his Fragments philosophiques and Du Vrai, du Beau, du Bien). Going back in time to this original moment, we advocate the theory that could be summed up in the following phrase : limited democracy means limited literature.

Resumen La literatura varía, en diacronía y en sincronía. Tan pronto como se restituye su lugar a esas variaciones, la concepción absoluta de la literatura deja de aparecer como absoluta y eterna ; se presenta con una historia que, en Francia, se diseña a principios del siglo XIX, cuando esa concepción fue teorizada por Víctor Cousin (a partir de 1815 y en varios libros, entre ellos, Fragments philosophiques y Du Vrai, du Beau, du Bien). Al mismo tiempo, se instala una determinada concepción de la democracia. El artículo propone un retorno sobre ese origen y adelanta una tesis que podría ser enunciada de la siguiente manera : a democracia restringida, literatura restringida.
