La discussion s’articule autour des concepts d’objet et de masochisme tous deux mortifères ; l’auteur propose en conséquence de parler d’une subversion mortifère (à l’instar et à l’envers du processus de subversion libidinale décrit par C. Dejours) pour rendre compte du dévoiement de l’autoconservation par le dynamisme pulsionnel mortifère pouvant alors mener le sujet à sa perte dès lors qu’il se trouve simultanément dans un environnement peu propice à le contenir.

The Chronicle of an (In)-evitable Demise ? Masochism, Object and Deathly Subversion in Morbid Obesity In this article, the author investigates the psychopathological mechanisms at play in the sudden and violently lethal somatic disorganization shown in a patient in the most improbable of contexts – hospital. The author explores the role played in this process by two concepts – that of the object and masochism, both death-bringing in essence - before going on to discuss the question of deathly subversion (exploring both similarities and differences with libidinal subversion as defined by C. Dejours). This accounts for how the individual’s sense of self-preservation is overcome by death drives strong enough to lead the subject to certain death if the environment in which they find themself is insufficient to contain and control these.
