Cet article propose une hypothèse sur le processus de construction symbolique du Prytanée à travers l’analyse de ses trois composantes fondamentales : tout d’abord, certaines des valeurs associées à la déesse Hestia ; ensuite, les significations, les usages et le symbolisme des désignations grecques anciennes du foyer ; et enfin, la transformation des formes architecturales grecques au début de l’âge du fer. Une fois l’hypothèse établie, la dernière partie de l’article propose, à travers l’exemple du Prytanée d’Athènes, une explication de l’étendue de ce symbolisme.

This paper offers a hypothesis about the process of the symbolic construction of the Prytaneum through the analysis of its three fundamental components: first, some of the values associated with the goddess Hestia; second, the meanings, uses and symbolism of the ancient Greek designations of the hearth; and finally, the transformation of Greek architectural forms in the early Iron Age. Once the hypothesis has been established, the final section of the paper offers, by means of the example of the Prytaneum in Athens, an explanation of the extent of this symbolism.

El presente artículo ofrece una hipótesis del proceso de construcción simbólica del Pritaneo a través del análisis de sus tres componentes fundamentales. Primero, algunos de los valores asociados con la diosa Hestia. Segundo, los significados, usos y simbolismo de las antiguas denominaciones griegas del hogar. Finalmente, la transformación de las formas arquitectónicas griegas desde inicios de la Edad del Hierro. Establecida la hipótesis, en la sección final del trabajo se ofrece, mediante el ejemplo del Pritaneo de Atenas, una explicación sobre el alcance de dicho simbolismo.
