Cette étude a pour objectif de cerner les diverses manières qui permirent à Sparte, après sa défaite à Leuctres, de maintenir sa cohésion sociale et d’éviter les conflits internes et la contestation de son régime politique. Nous soutenons que la cryptie fut fondée en tant que corps de surveillance pour faire face aux complots potentiels qui auraient pu être fomentés par ceux qui avaient perdu leurs droits politiques ou leurs richesses ou même par ceux qui appartenaient à des couches sociales inférieures. En ce qui concerne les néodamôdeis qui attendaient d’acquérir terre et liberté, ils sont placés dans le périoikis des cités, les renforçant démographiquement et militairement. Une grande partie des Spartiates qui avaient perdu terre et droits politiques et se trouvaient totalement démunis adhéraient à l’ oikos d’un riche citoyen spartiate ( homoio), tandis que ceux qui se trouvaient dans une situation pire, n’ayant pas d’autres moyens de survie ou de protection, étaient conduits à un état de dépendance qui renvoie au statut des hilotes.

“Social cohesion in fourth-century Sparta” This study aims to identify the various ways that enabled Sparta, after its defeat at Leuctra, to maintain social cohesion and avoid internal conflicts and challenges to its political system. I argue that the cryptie was founded as a monitoring body to cope with potential plots that could have been instigated by those who had lost their political rights or wealth, or even by those belonging to the lower social strata. With regard to the neodamodeis waiting to acquire land and freedom, they are placed within the perioikis of the cities, demographically and militarily strengthening them. Many Spartans who had lost their land and political rights and were in a situation of poverty were absorbed into the oikos of a rich Spartan citizen ( homoio), while those who were in an even worse situation, having no other means of survival or protection, were driven to a state of dependency similar to the status of helots.
