The Disavowal of the Feminine in Abbé de Choisy

Adolescence is a good time for revealing perverse organization. We propose to illustrate this using the “Mémoires de l’abbé de Choisy habillé en femme ” (1687–1695), a reading recommended by J. Lacan. Structured on the maternal imaginary, Choisy’s cross-dressing practice reflects a denial of the castration of the subject and its identification with the phallus. The pubertal novelty is hence disavowed and the Feminine absented through the maintenance of a phallicization of the penis. For him, a fetishist strategy was the only way in which to respond to his mother’s death.
