Cet article explore le parcours artistique du graveur Jérôme David entre France et Italie. À la fin de l’année 1625, Jérôme David s’établit dans la République de Venise, où il se met au service des nombreux lettrés membres de l’Académie des Incogniti. Cette collaboration lui permet de s’affirmer dans l’illustration de la littérature savante. Le rapport privilégié que David entretient avec les Incogniti avantage sa carrière, tant italienne que française : c’est probablement toujours grâce au système de recommandation mis en place par les académiciens qu’il travaille à Aix-en-Provence dans l’entourage de Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, lui-même proche correspondant des Incogniti.

This article explores the artistic journey of the engraver Jérôme David between France and Italy. At the end of 1625 Jérôme David settled in the Republic of Venice, where he put himself at the service of many writers who were members of the Academy of the Unknowns. Through this collaboration, he established himself as an illustrator of scholarly writing. This privileged connection with the Unknowns boosted his career, as much in Italy as in France: it was probably thanks to the recommendation system established by the Academy members that he found work in Aix-en-Provence among the circle of Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, himself a key correspondent of the Unknowns.
