This study analyzes the moral economy of the pilgrimage to Mecca, which in Senegal is becoming an activity of particular interest to women. It examines how women have appropriated this activity through the reinvention of “tontines” or savings societies, so as to combine them with the powerful discourse of Islamic charity in order to organize and finance their religious pilgrimages. This article aims to contribute to the discussion on the concept of moral economy, which is understood to be a system of values and norms that influence the establishment of the networks that constitute the economic sphere.
