While increasing income inequality has raised intense public debates in the United States, San Francisco is pointed at as one of the most unequal large cities in the country. This criticism implicitly assumes that inequality is unjust per se, even though philosophers have long warned against any confusion between these two terms. This paper critically investigates the relationship between inequality and injustice by focusing on the case of income inequality in the city of San Francisco. It first shows that this question cannot be addressed without taking space into account. It then examines the deep feeling of injustice that rises from the awareness of inequality, which in turn stirs strong potest movements. It finally studies to what extent San Franciscans’ values and mobilization actually frame public policy in a city known as the US capital of Progressivism. Eventually, by showing the links between inequality (made visible through space), resentment, mobilization and public policy, this paper aims to understand if San Francisco is not only an unequal city but also an unjust city.
