How does entry into the world of work change young people’s perceptions of themselves and of their youth? The elements of professional socialisation studied here include learning how to deal with a salary and with fatigue, navigating the balance between private and professional life, and understanding the hierarchical order. The population of this study is made up of apprentices from working-class backgrounds, in CAP and baccalaureate vocational courses (mechanics, commerce, and body care). In particular, the article focuses on the skills acquired from the new daily routine resulting from regular and continuous employment, from managing wages to ways of dealing with social relations at work. Their subaltern positions provide a privileged perspective on the experience of conformity at work for young people, whose accounts reveal the impact on their trajectories of the experience of entering the workforce.
