What was the nature of the relationship between the Jacobin clubs and the representatives on mission within the framework of the Revolutionary government? If the historiography has acknowledged the initiative Jacobin clubs retained during the Year II, their alleged submission to the authority of the “Missionaries of the Republic” that they assisted in the surveillance of the constituted authorities deserves to be more fully examined. The article will analyze what was at issue in the interactions between the two institutions, using the case study of the department of Mayenne. The study of the reception of the representative on mission by the Jacobin clubs, their joint operations in the reorganization of the local administrations, and the repertory of collective actions the Jacobin clubs could use against a representative on mission should highlight their relations differently than the sole perspective of political domination.
