This article examines the relationships between clothing and revolution, through private, diplomatic and visual sources. Between 1780 and 1830, the Romanian countries experienced multiple transformations that affected appearances and lifestyle. The geopolitical context stimulated the change from fashion “à la turca” to fashion “à la franca”, thanks to a large and permanent Russian and French presence in the towns, the dissemination of a spirit of revolution, and also through an openness to these ideas that came from the Ottoman Empire. The process is complex, with backward and forward movement, conditioned by progress in education, economic and cultural investment in other tastes and, above all, by the political changes that took place in Southeast Europe.
