Was Carbonnier an anthropologist of law? Such a perspective would certainly have enriched and honored this discipline, but the question must be no, for two reasons essentially. First, because the horizon of his approach remains within the boundaries of Western tradition, and second because his concern with “ethnographic” description did not lead him to generalizations or scientific laws which he seemed wary of.
