This article presents several stages in the reception and discussion of the Italian communist’s work within the PCF, focusing on unknown and misunderstood aspects of this question, and going beyond the usual caricature whereby Gramsci was purely and simply ignored or despised. Although his thought may not have had a central place in the “Marxism-Leninism” that had long dominated the PCF, it was nevertheless scrutinized repeatedly and, in particular, was used by communist intellectuals within the Party in order to try and renovate Marxism.
