Work without a society? The limits of Lukács’ ontological interpretation of the concept of work

This article attempts to locate the ontological concept of work found in Lukács’ late writings among other interpretations of this concept in the Marxist tradition. Focusing mainly on the Ontology of Social Being, it first raises the question of the epistemological difficulties of this concept, and then turn to its relations with the idea of the socio-political centrality of work. Can direct political consequences be drawn from the ontology of work? Are the different versions of the ontology of work in Marxism shaped by the requirement of an ontological foundation the political project rooted in the workplace?
