This paper discusses the ways in which archaeology and the history of ancient art are conceived and presented in the works of synthesis with mainly didactic purposes. Critical analysis of some recent books raises some questions concerning the logic of the transmission of knowledge in the academic world, the use of principles of archaeology and history of art, and the actual disciplinary dichotomy between Greece and Rome, with a particular attention to implications in the French university world.
