This article deals with the issues at the crux of the conflict between Durkheim and Tarde, and on which the two thinkers continued to disagree after Tarde’s nomination to the Collège de France in 1900, and until his death in 1904. These are: the relationship between sociology and psychology, the place of sociology among the social sciences and the role played by the individual in history, especially by the figure of the great man.
