This introduction presents a brief overview of the political and historiographical debates on the place of utilitarianism within the liberal paradigm. For utilitarianism occupies a specific place in the genealogy of liberal thought. How and to what extent should interests be taken into account in politics? How can the conditions for the greatest happiness of the greatest number be created? What happens when liberty and human rights conflict? As new sources are being made available to scholars, new answers to these questions appear in French scholarship.
