University-based Research and the Mass Dissemination of Education

This article describes the various research practices of the “enseignants-chercheursâ€? in the humanities, social and natural sciences, as they appear in a question-based survey of French universities conduct-ed in 2005. These various practices are described in social and educational terms, but also related to the position that teaching occupies in each discipline, and to the different modes of raising research funds. The effects of the second “massificationâ€? and of the accelerated professionalization of higher education have resulted in a far-reaching transformation of the balance between departments and disciplines, which translated concretely in the issue of the “governanceâ€? of universities.
