Barzanîs community has given, since the end of the 19th century, a lineage of religious and political leaders to the region of Erbil, capital of the current Kurdish Autonomous Region of Iraq. From a relational approach to domination, the article distinguishes three moments in the formation of the Barzanîs. First, it considers the conditions of their genesis which goes back to the socioeconomic transformations of the late Ottoman period, especially in the peasant revolts against the chieftainships benefiting from the land distributions operated by the Sublime Porte. Questioning the interaction between tribal and religious facts, he describes the charismatic domination of the shaykh and their specific relationship to Islam. Then, it emphasizes the mechanisms of governmentality that organize the cohesion of the community and require the emergence of a supra-tribal politico-religious power. Finally, it tries to understand how the politicization of the Kurdish identity, followed by the experience of relegation and exile, could provide the basis for the transition of the Barzanîs to Kurdism and the transformation of authority within them – the Sufi lodge ( tekye) giving way, as a political institution, to the party and the revolutionary army, with the typical figure of “General” Mistefa Barzanî replacing that of his brother, the shaykh Ahmed.
