What Future for Farming in the Cotton Growing Area in Western Burkina Faso? Agro-Pastoral Dynamics and Territorial Restructuring

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2012. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The presentation of breeding systems shows that different practices coexist on the same territories, questioning pastoral mobility. How can the mobility of herds be reconsidered in a context of rapidly increasing croplands and diminishing pastures? Can the traditional vocation of the cotton area as a space for pasture at the time of transhumance be maintained? At what conditions? Current developments reflect competing visions over the use of the areas concerned and may lead to environmental and economic deadlocks. The transhumance system is confronted with obstacles imposed on the mobility of herds, while the sedentary system fails to reach a genuine autonomy in the spatial management of herds. The lack of equilibrium leads to raising the question of the role of livestock in the regional economy through different scenarios.
