La Peau de chagrin: On studying the novel at high school
Type de matériel :
44
The inclusion of La Peau de chagrin in the limited syllabus for preliminary high school examinations in France offers an opportunity for literature teachers to invite their students to examine the ethical questions raised by literature and to frame their teaching schedule around the tension between “creation and destruction.” Through the study of the system of values embodied by the novel’s characters, the didactic approaches that underpin genres such as fanfiction, character journals, or pre-philosophical questioning will allow a “literary reading” of this work in class, motivating a personal, up-to-date, and active encounter between the student-reader and Balzac’s work.
