Queerness and Xenophobia in Postcolonial Hindu Nationalism

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2011. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article disrupts the “common sense” notion that colonialism brought gender and sexual liberation to colonialized sites. Based on an analysis of English and Hindi language publications produced by right-wing Hindu nationalist organizations in (otherwise) pluralist India, this article opens a space for reflection on queer genders and sexualities in colonial, postcolonial and neo-colonial national formations. It reveals the genealogy of Hindu nationalist queerphobia, which assigns anormative genders and sexualities to lgbtq subjects but also to all (Muslim) Others, in colonial discourse and practice. In contrast, the Hindu symbolic provides the elements for queer acceptance to selective queerphilia.
