Psychoanalytic Treatment and Subjectivation of the Act of Homicide in Psychotics

From the early writings of Pinel on mania without delirium up to the most recent research, the idea that psychotic individuals present a danger is an accepted one. As compelling as the results of epidemiological and statistical studies on violence perpetrated by the mentally ill may be, they cannot suffice for a clinical approach to the question of psychotic subjects’ passage to the act of murder or attempted murder. For factors that may be predictive of violence do not allow us to identify the subjective logic of these criminal acts, nor the psychic functions that they fulfil. Identifying the coordinates of these acts, and the real with which the subject was faced, can help us to understand the peculiar logic of the subject. But it can also help the therapist to determine the correct direction for treatment, as the cases of Louis and Marc will show us.
