Creative process and sublimation in the self-taught creator: Clinical and projective illustration

In the clinical analysis of well-known artists and Art Brut authors, sublimation is considered according to different levels of symbolization, which supposes a non-pathological heterogeneity of psychic functioning. We hypothesize that this heterogeneity can be found in self-taught creators during the creative process. We draw on different cases, paying particular attention to that of Béatrice, selected for its clinical representativeness. For each case, we use semi-structured clinical research interviews and projective methods interpreted according to the Paris School, analyzed according to two axes of Pascal Roman’s interpretative framework (2018). The results show a heterogeneous, non-pathological psychic functioning revealing different forms of psychic work and discrepancies in symbolization work.
