Montesquieu’s criticism of Law’s System. Who is the enemy of liberalism?
Type de matériel :
47
Whereas French 18th century economists (Melon, Gournay, Forbonnais), supported Law’s System, Montesquieu persistently criticized Law in whom he saw « one of the greatest promoters of despotism ». He does not only explain the System’s demise as a victory of « doux commerce » on State authority, but uses, at the political and social levels of his critique, arguments which are to be found again in liberal writings such as Tocqueville’s. The way Montesquieu criticized the despotic ways of easing the tide of the commercial spirit invites us to distinguish between the vindication of political liberties and the dogmatic apology of economical liberalism.JEL Codes :?B11, B31
