Based on qualitative and quantitative surveys, this paper documents the changes in the academic environment of three African countries: Burundi, Cameroon and Gabon, since the end of colonization, as can be seen through the concept of gender. The argument is that although access to higher education for women and consequently to teacher-research professions is a reality in the law, gender continues to structure academic choices and determine professional trajectories.
