Based on a twenty-two month fieldwork conducted between 2018 and 2023, this article analyzes the case of poisoning of a pastor with a view to unveil the wider conditions of uncertainty and threat among refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo living in Kampala, Uganda. Four situations of interaction are described in this paper. They make it possible to examine the discourses and stereotypes about threatening and dangerous individuals, and the evolving suspicion of the perpetrator of poisoning and of its shifting interpretation. The details of this case reveal the ordinary relationships of competition for resettlement, the suspicion about “fake refugees” in Kampala, and the situational resources of actors caught in the web of uncertainty and conflict.
