The disturbing diversity of shadowy registers

The shadow is one of the concepts emblematic of Jungian thought, which analyzes it in various registers. Although it is relatively easy to grasp the personal shadow – which is quite similar to the Freudian concept of the repressed – it is, on the other hand, far more difficult to understand the collective shadow. The author suggests distinctions between various interpretations of the collective shadow, and outlines a method for discovering their inter-relatedness.
