Based upon clinical observations and modern literature on the subject, the author highlights the distinctive features of borderline functioning during a crisis. Institutional care helps develop transference, but can also reproduce or amplify patients’ splittings or projections. Caregivers working in crisis centers need to invent clinical responses in order to transform the crisis into an opportunity to develop thought, enabling a psychotherapeutic aspect of psychiatric work to appear.
