The Invention of the Social Hatred Crime in France (1880–1940)

Since the 1880s, social moralists, observers, magistrates, and forensic psychiatrists have been concerned about the corruption of society. Contemporary changes affect criminal behaviors, replacing violent crimes with greed. In this overall context, hate crimes occupy a particular place. “Rioters,” young people, and servicemen become the three targets of hate. However, “hate crime” is not a psycho-legal category, but a form of “crime motivated by anger.” It is also revealing of social changes, the transformations of the psychic economy, and of the fears of an era.
