This paper starts a reflection on the possible foundations of a European social psychology. We recall the European philosophical background, the growth of psychology in Europe and in the United States, the main points and problems, before examining specific problems of social psychology (definitions, methods, various influences). Finally, we outline a European social psychological domain by examining European theories and paradigms (social representations, social identity, discourse analysis, intergroup attributions), cooperations, and research programs concerned with Europe or specifically European problems.
