The ranking of scientific journals in psychology, published by the Agency for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (AERES), is intended as a point of reference for ranking researchers and laboratories. However, radically contradicting its avowed intentions both on the national and European levels, this ranking directly threatens the very existence of those journals which do not attain to the top few places. Furthermore, French language journals are overwhelmed by the predominant presence of English language journals. Criteria other than those currently used, and used in highly amateur fashion, are conceivable, once we make sure that the evaluation of journals is actually among the AERES’s missions.
