In the course of this interview, conducted by Aurélie Maurin Souvignet, Vincent de Gaulejac actualizes several concepts arising from his recent studies on paradox-inducing (“ paradoxantes”) organizations with respect to the very particular situation of psychologists. To this end he retraces the historical, conceptual and epistemological perspectives of the fundamental impact of the managerial revolution on subjects and, a fortiori, on psychologists as professionals of psychic life. In particular, he shows how new management tools, management in terms of objectives, the individualized evaluation of performances, etc., centred essentially on quantitative and financial indicators, are in complete contradiction with a conception of clinical practice centred on the subject. He argues, moreover, that in order to emerge creatively from these paradox-inducing situations, it is necessary to fight against splits, beginning with the split that artificially opposes psyche and society, but also psychology and sociology, by re-establishing transitional areas or spaces that make it possible to develop the capacity for symbolization.
