The Charlie Hebdo “survivors’ front cover”: Hyper-mediatization and editorials

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2016. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The publication of the “survivors’ issue” of Charlie Hebdo (and more specifically its front page) raised particularly challenging issues for those with an interest in the role, functions, and modalities of media discourse. Based on the study of a corpus of French and British and American articles, this paper examines the media coverage linked to the hyper-mediatization of the January 14, 2015 issue, and then offers an analysis of the cartoon itself to consider how it strengthens the ambivalence inherent to the genre. It also shows that the apparent unanimity of the French press masked varying editorial positions toward this cartoon. Finally, an analysis of the contrast with British and American newspaper editorial positions raises the crucial issue of how to interpret the specificities of media ethics.
