Recreational Sexuality of Physically Disabled Men

What forms does the sexuality of physically disabled men take? How do they cope with the constraints imposed by their disabled bodies? Interviews and documentary data provide the vehicle for these men to describe the situation and their feelings in their own words. Analysing this sexuality using the concept of sexual scripts it is shown how the impossibility of sticking to norms enables them to move away from them by creating their own physically adapted scripts with their partners. Their recreational sexuality is diverse, borrowing scripts from other minority groups, being marked by negotiation between the partners as to the symbolism of the different parts of the body and practices, flexibility in adopting male and female roles and reciprocity. The goal of their sexual activity is often stated as being “connection” between the partners in a form of enjoyment that is nourished by the pleasure of the other. The recreational sexuality of disabled people, largely ignored in mainstream research, breaks down norms and shows a subversive potential.
