The authors provides two clinical illustrations to show how attaining grandparenthood causes the redeployment of oedipal fantasies and defences towards the younger generations and a reworking of identifications that in turns threatens and supports the grandparental couple’s narcissistic nucleus. Family therapy provides the authors with insights into the grandparents’ role in transmission between generations, with the dual axes of symbolic and narcissistic filiation as theoretical references.
